Online Bike Related Sites

BikeJournal.com

The best site to track your biking related statistics and communicate with others in the biking community on bike related issues.  At this site Greg is GTDBike(Mr) and Pat is GTDBike(Ms).

Bike Forums

A good site to research and discuss bike related activities.

Sheldon Brown's Glossary of Bike Terms

Look up those strange bike terms here.

Ken Kifer's Bike Pages

A wealth of bike related information.  Some articles tend to ramble on.  Nonetheless, there is a lot of good information here.  Information ranges from maintenance, to humor, to terminology.  Ken was killed by a drunk driver in September of 2003.  Consequently, we don't know how much longer this site will exist.

Bicycle Clubs and Organizations

The Evanston Bicycle Club

We belong to this bike club.  Non-members are welcome to join EBC rides (liability waiver required).   A detailed ride schedule is maintained on the web site.  The main annual event is the North Shore Century in September of each year.

HumanTransport.org

A site dedicated to preserving the basic right to travel on public roads and universal access.

League of American Bicyclists

The League of American Bicyclists promotes bicycling for fun, fitness and transportation and works through advocacy and education for a bicycle-friendly America.  We found their index of Better Bicycling Fact Sheets to be particularly helpful.

League of Illinois Bicyclists

The League of Illinois Bicyclists (LIB) is a statewide advocacy voice for all Illinois bicyclists, promoting bicycle access, education, and safety. Their objectives include: Maintaining and increasing access to public facilities; Enhancing the use of bicycles for transportation and recreation; Educating bicyclists and motorists about their mutual rights and responsibilities: Educating cyclists on safe cycling practices.

We found their Illinois Bike Law Cards to be useful.

Bike Shops, Suppliers and Equipment

Village Pedaler Bike Shop, South Elgin, IL

This is our local bike shop (LBS) in South Elgin.  Phone (847) 741-5938.  Karrie Ozyuk is the Store Manager.

CateyeŽ Astrale-8 Bike Computer

This is the cyclocomputer that Greg uses.  It has all the standard speed and time related functions plus cadence. We have found it to be reliable, rugged, easy to use, and reasonably priced.  The big plus on this cyclocomputer is the relatively large display.  Even my "elder eyes" can read the display without reading glasses.  Here is a link to a review of this product.  We have no commercial interest in this product.  This is a straight up recommendation based on about two years of use.

Food, Lodging and Entertainment

The Boulevard Woodgrill, Arlington, VA

An excellent place to eat in the Washington DC / Northern Virginia area.  We are completely unbiased in highly recommending our son's restaurant.   The Boulevard Woodgrill is at 2901 Wilson Boulevard in the Clarendon section of Arlington, VA.  It is about 5 blocks from the Curtis Bike Trail.

Abbey's High Street Bed and Breakfast, Galena, IL

If you're in the historic Galena area for biking (i.e. Elizabeth Ups And Downs Ride) this is a great place to stay.  Good food, excellent accommodations, friendly inn keepers and VERY challenging hills.  We have no commercial interest in this business.  This is a straight up recommendation based on staying there.
